Weddings/Blessing Ceremonies

Wedding.gifA Christian marriage ceremony is a service of worship offered to God. The essence of marriage is a covenanted commitment that has its foundation in the faithfulness of God’s love. The marriage ceremony is the wonderful occasion on which two people unite as husband and wife in the mutual exchange of covenant promises.

The pastor acts as an official representative of the church and gives the marriage the church’s blessing. The congregation joins in affirming the marriage and in offering support and thanksgiving for the new family.

If a couple wishes to be married in this church, they must meet with Reverend Hoglund three times prior to the wedding. The pre-marital counseling will include discussion of the Christian understanding of the marriage relationship, and the Prepare/Enrich Inventory (cost is $35, payable at second session).

The scheduling of the wedding considers the needs of the couple and the calendar of the church. If desired, other ordained Christian ministers may assist Reverend Hoglund in the wedding service. Family and friends of the couple may share in the leadership of the service by reading scripture, or in other ways discussed with the pastor.

Music of joy, praise and thanksgiving may be included in the service after consultation with the pastor. This music may be vocal and/or instrumental. All music must be appropriate for a service of worship. Because a Christian wedding is a ministry of the church, only weddings with Reverend Hoglundofficiating will be held in this building. No alcoholic beverages or smoking are permitted on church property at any time. Sometimes Reverend Hoglund is willing to perform weddings for couples who are not members of First Congregational United Church of Christ but strongly prefers that the bride and/or groom be a member in good standing of a Christian church.

Reverend Hoglund rarely officiates at weddings in a location other than the church sanctuary or chapel. We are delighted that you have found your life partner and wish to publicly declare your commitment to each other. We hope your wedding at First Congregational UCC will be a joyous and dignified celebration of your love. First Congregational UCC does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. Christian same-sex couples who wish to have their life-long commitment recognized in a blessing ceremony should contact Reverend Hoglund.
